How to Make Cinco de Mayo Fun for Kids

0

Cinco de Mayo, which officially marks Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, is really more of an excuse for people to eat Mexican food and drink margaritas. Mexican restaurants across the country will be advertising food and drink specials to get people in their doors on Friday, May 5. And if this is how your family chooses to celebrate- just make sure you go somewhere that serves homemade tortillas. Trust me. If you have kids and want to make that first Friday of the month a little more festive at home instead of battling restaurant crowds, we’ve got some great ideas for you. Our City Mom Collective Sister Sites have some great resources of mom-approved recipes, activities, crafts, and more to make Cinco de Mayo a memorable day in your family.

Respectful Celebrations

It is important to understand that Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican independence Day, and is not even a major holiday in Mexico. If you choose to celebrate with your kids, be sure you are doing it respectfully and not perpetuating cultural appropriation in your festivities, as explained in this post from ABQ Mom.
