MesoMaya Dallas :: Going Beyond Tex-Mex

City Moms Blog Network partnered with MesoMaya in Dallas, Texas during our 2015 Sister Site Conference. We were provided a complimentary lunch in exchange for sharing this restaurant review with you!

If you’ve ever headed to Texas, you’ll know that Tex-Mex restaurants are a dime a dozen. There will be a different restaurant on every corner and a “mom and pop” in most neighborhoods. Some serve more traditional Tex-Mex while others have transitioned into more modern dishes using only fresh ingredients. Ask any Texan where to find “Mexican” food and they’ll be quick to direct you to their favorite spot!

City Moms Blog Volunteers Meso MayaLately, restaurants in Dallas have moved away from traditional “Tex-Mex” and a new style of food has emerged. Latin American restaurants have begun popping up across the metroplex serving authentic flavors from Mexico, El Salvador, Brazil, and more. While in Dallas, the volunteers for our City Moms Blog Network Sister Site Conference had the opportunity to try MesoMaya Comida y Copas — a restaurant in the heart of Uptown built to pay tribute to true Mexican and Mayan foods, techniques, and methods.

From the herbs and spices they use for homemade adobos and salsas, to their hand-ground tortillas, to the entrees and sauces created from scratch, every dish is prepared with a reverence to the states of Mexico—Yucatan, Vera Cruz, and Chiapas.

MesoMaya opened their doors to our site owners and City Moms Blog staff by providing us with a tasting of their various appetizers, entrees, desserts, and famous margaritas.

To start, we sampled their house salsa, Queso Poblano and Guacamole. Both were fresh and flavorful and contained a few local-to-Mexico ingredients like Oaxacan sea salt and melted Chihuahua cheeses.Meso Maya Review City Moms Blog 1

The Ensalada de la Casa was a simple but delicious starter salad before our entrees with mixed greens, apples, tomatoes, cotijia cheese, and a honey-lime cilantro vinaigrette.

For lunch, we were given a choice of some of their specialty dishes — Serrano Enchiladas, Tacos de Carnitas, and Budin de Carne. If you’ve not had traditional Mexican, the Tacos de Carnitas would be a “safe” entree to choose! These tacos are filled with pork carnitas, pickled red onions, chile de arbol salsa, queso fresco, and topped with freshly chopped cilantro.

If you’re adventurous, try the Budin de Carne. A Budin is similar to a “Mexican” lasagna. Using homemade white corn tortillas, the chef layers melted Chihuahua cheese, monterrey jack, and queso asadero between your choice of beef tenderloin, chicken, vegetables, or shrimp.

And no matter when you choose to visit, you have to wash it all down with one of their famous house-made margaritas. Voted “Best in Dallas” by the Dallas Observer, the Avocado Margarita and Serrano Berry Margarita were amazing! Meso Maya City Moms Blog 2
