I will never forget that moment when my younger brother and only sibling told us as a family that he had been accepted into Officer Candidate School with the United States Marines. He’d just graduated with a double major in Accounting and Finance, was practicing Commercial Real Estate, and had a fiancée in medical school. Within a year he was moving to Washington DC for OCS and Training and then 2 years later, was deployed to Afghanistan for 12 months.

During this time, he missed the birth of his only nephew and wouldn’t be with us again until after his first birthday. I still can’t look back on this time without being overcome with emotions. The feelings of joy that he made it through his five years of service unscathed (physically) to feelings of terror at the thought of what “could” have happened—and I recognize that I’m simply his sister; not a wife who was counting down the months…days..until she would see her husband again or a mother having to battle the day struggles alone while her spouse was serving our country.

While I feel nothing but pride for our men and women who are serving in the Armed Forces, it’s those serving our country at home by being a pillar of strength and incredible support system while loved ones are away that I truly admire. That’s why I was thrilled when my new R. Riveter American Handmade Tote arrived!

KS-29-small This KickStarter company began in 2011 by Cameron Cruse & Lisa Bradley. Their mission is to support military families—specifically spouses—to provided flexible and mobile employment while living on base or while spouses are deployed.

Each bag is 100% American made by military spouses around the United States using recycled military materials. On each bag, you’ll find a hand-stamped number which identifies the date and individual maker. My favorite part: bits of yellow are ribboned throughout the bag as a tribute to our troops.

In addition to tote bags, you’ll also find duffels, clutches, wool handbags, and even a little something for Fido!

R Riveter

R. Riveter recently launched their business on Kickstarter to help meet their growing supply demand. They’ll need more space and equipment, and hopefully use additional funds to market to military spouses who are in search of a little part-time income. They’d love for you to help support their cause on Kickstarter by making a small donation. And then make sure to help support the women behind R. Riveter by visiting their online shop.

And we have great news! One lucky mom will win the Reveille: Large Tote valued at $195 (highlighted in the photo above). This tote is perfect as a chic diaper bag, for the office, or even a quick weekend getaway.
