schwans-logoWhen I was offered the chance to receive a $100 credit towards a couple family dinners at Schwan’s Home Service, Inc., I immediately thought of my husband (and dreamed of a couple nights of not having to cook) and said YES!! Since I’ve known my husband, he’s been talking about the Schwan’s truck that would pull up to his childhood home in St. Louis, Missouri and bring all kinds of yummy meals and treats to his mother who was desperate to get delicious food on the table for her three children. That was the 80’s.

Fast forward to 2014, and now we are the ones desperate to get a wholesome, yummy meal on the table, that the kids will actually eat, and that won’t completely break the bank. On average, I cook at home about 3-4 times a week and we round out the other days with leftovers and a meal or two at a restaurant or takeout. While I have become pretty savvy with couponing and meal planning, I am not the mom who has 25 meals stored back in the fridge for future meal “un-planned” nights. And let’s talk about how mind-numbing it can be to take two young children to the store. Amen? Amen.

And this is why I now officially love Schwan’s.

First off, see this guy? Mike? He brought me my food. Like, to my door. All I did was let my rep know what I wanted to order (which, by the way is super easy to do with their Schwan’s App and their user-friendly website.) Once I placed my order, the scheduling coordinator called me within 24 hours, and the next day Mike was at my door. Knowing how much my husband recalled such great memories of his Schwan’s man, I asked if my kids could come check out the truck, and not only did he show them inside the truck (obviously the only time I want my kids looking inside a stranger’s truck), but he picked them up and smiled for the camera. Their day was made. First Schwan’s memory tucked away.

The week that I received my Schwan’s order could not have come at a more perfect time, unbeknownst to me, even. We sold our house. We searched for homes. We started the process of buying a house. My daughter started preschool, and that same night started the Awana program at our church. I got sick. My husband got sick. Our MOPS program at church started and I was a table leader for the first time. We’ve all been there…a full schedule and little to no time to meal plan, let alone grocery shop and then prepare the meal that the two- and four-year olds will most likely shun.

Again, Schwan’s to the rescue!!

We started with a breakfast meal of their Mini Scramblers (little breakfast pizzas made with eggs, bacon and mozzarella cheese), Blueberry Muffins Starters, and fruit smoothies made with their Golden Fruit Blend. My daughter loved the smoothie, and my son loved the Minis Scramblers so much he said “yum, yum, yummy in my tum, tum, tummy” and proceeded to ask for more…and more. (And my husband asked for more a couple days later.) The muffins were a hit, and I was able to take the remaining ones to my MOPS meeting and offer them to my mom-friends. BONUS.

Our next meal was a childhood classic: Crispy Chicken Breast Strips (aka, Chicken Tenders), Mac & Cheese, MicroSteam Whole Green Beans (made adult-friendly by adding tomatoes and almonds), complete with Chocolate Ice Cream (my husband’s #1 Schwan’s request) after the kids were in bed. We have enough to last us one more meal, and next time I will try it with their Southwest Roasted Corn, which is a current specialty item and looks delicious. (Yay for a future easy, yummy side!)

Our final meal was hands down one of the best I’ve had in awhile. Slow-Roasted Beef Pot Roast with Gravy. Garlic Red-Skinned Mashed Potatoes. Broccoli with cheese. My grandma from Kentucky has a saying: “Well, I swanee” when she can’t believe something is so good. This meal gets an “I swanee”. Now I admit, taking the food out of their frozen packaging made me a little nervous. The meat looked like a frozen gelled block, and the potatoes were cut up into little pod or medallion type pieces. I followed the instructions on the packaging and was so pleasantly surprised by what we ended up putting on the table for dinner that night. The flavor, texture and quality were on par with what I would expect if I’d make the meal from scratch myself, if not better. My daughter wasn’t feeling well that night and didn’t eat anything, but my son ate his entire plate while I went back for seconds.

If you’ve heard of Schwan’s but been intimidated by how the process works and wondered about the quality or freshness of their food, I can honestly tell you it is good. Really, really good. Now, can man live on Schwann’s alone? Unfortunately not, if you want salads, fresh fruit and other staple grocery items. But if you want a freezer full of delicious, impressive last-minute meal options or daily snacks for your entire family, or for when you have those unexpected harder-than-usual weeks, let the Schwan’s man be your go-to delivery service. I guarantee you will find him to be your new best friend. And your kids will have a new favorite memory.

And, I have some great news!  Schwan’s is offering all new Schwans Customers a way to save money using the Coupon Code “britth2” which will give readers $10 off a $50.00 order.
